As we step into 2024, Mercedes-Benz is all set to kick off its Indian lineup with the launch of the revamped GLS. This flagship SUV, which made its global debut in April, will make its way to Indian streets on January 8, 2024, marking the start of an exciting year for Mercedes-Benz with nine planned launches.
The new GLS promises a fresh look, with noticeable changes to its outer appearance. The standout feature is the updated front grille, now with four horizontal louvres finished in Silver Shadow, giving the SUV a bold and confident look. The headlights and front bumper have been redesigned, adding a modern touch. The rear of the GLS gets new LED tail-lamps, contributing to its distinct identity. The SUV will also come with new 20-inch wheels in Himalayas Grey for that added touch of sophistication.
Inside the car, the GLS is stepping up its game with a revamped MBUX infotainment system. This system, positioned in the centre and the driver’s instrument cluster, now offers three display modes – Classic, Sporty, and Discreet. The interior will boast new upholstery options, Catalana Brown and Bahia Brown, elevating the luxury feel. For parking ease, the GLS will feature a Parking Package with a 360-degree camera and an off-road mode, providing various camera angles around the vehicle.

Under the hood, the GLS will retain its reliable powertrain options. You can expect a 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine or a 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel engine. Both engines, paired with a smooth 9-speed automatic gearbox, will power all four wheels through Mercedes’ 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. This setup ensures not just a luxurious ride but an exhilarating driving experience, making the GLS a strong contender in the luxury SUV segment.
While the focus is on looks and luxury, safety and technology are not overlooked. The GLS is expected to retain and enhance its safety features, including a 360-degree camera, Heads-Up Display, ABS, airbags, traction control, stability control, hill hold assist, and hill descent control.
Mercedes-Benz India has chosen the Completely Knocked Down (CKD) route for the GLS, assembling it at their manufacturing facility in Chakan, near Pune. This decision aligns with the 'Make in India' initiative, offering a competitive pricing structure. The GLS launch on January 8 is just the beginning for Mercedes-Benz’s year in India with a total of nine new launches to look forward to including the likes of the new AMG GT, EQS SUV, GLC Coupe, CLE Class, GLA facelift and the electric G.
Competing with the likes of BMW X7, Audi Q8, Volvo XC90, and Land Rover Discovery, the GLS aims to solidify its position as Mercedes-Benz's flagship SUV. With an expected price around Rs 1.50 crore (ex-showroom), the GLS is strategically positioned to attract those who seek a blend of performance, luxury, and brand prestige.
