India’s largest carmaker has garnered more than 32,000 bookings since it opened the window for the SUV on January 12. While the MT variant accounted for 50 percent of the bookings, the remaining were generated from the AT variant. Maruti Suzuki had recently indicated that it expects the waiting period for this model to go up to 5 to 6 months.
Global promise
“India holds a significant position for Suzuki Motor Corporation not only as a domestic market but also as a global export base. It gives me immense pleasure to announce that India will proudly serve as the mother plant for the Jimny and will be the first market for its launch. This truly reaffirms our commitment to Make-In-India for the world,” added Takeuchi.
A Maruti Suzuki official recently told Moneycontrol that it expects 60 percent of this SUV's sales to be derived from tier 1 markets and the remaining from tier 2 and 3 markets.
“A lot of people who are not staying in urban areas but are into off-roading will definitely find it very attractive. There will also be a lot of people who are actually not into off-roading but want to give that impression will also buy it,” Shashank Srivastava, Senior Executive Officer (Sales & Marketing), MSIL. He also indicated that the demand from overseas markets for this model would be higher than the domestic market.
