The Indian stock market will remain closed for four consecutive days this Diwali season. Both the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE) will be shut on October 19, 21, and 22, along with the weekend, as Dhanteras falls on Sunday, October 19, Diwali (Laxmi Pujan) on October 21, and Balipratipada on October 22.
The Multi-Commodity Exchange (MCX) and currency derivatives will also observe the same closure for four days, covering the festival and weekend.

As per NSE and BSE circulars released on September 22, the Diwali Muhurat Trading session will be held on October 21 from 1:45 pm to 2:45 pm, with trade modifications allowed until 2:55 pm.
"All trades executed in this Diwali Muhurat trading session shall result in settlement obligations," the NSE said in its circular.
Muhurat Trading is a special one-hour symbolic session conducted annually on Diwali to mark the start of the new Hindu calendar year (Samvat 2082 in 2025). While usually held in the evening, this year's session will take place in the afternoon.
Trading will be available across multiple segments, including equities, commodity derivatives, currency derivatives, equity futures & options, and securities lending & borrowing (SLB).
Historically, Muhurat trading has often been optimistic, with benchmark indices ending in the green 13 out of the past 16 years, despite lower trading volumes. In 2024, the festive session saw both indices gain - the BSE Sensex rose 335 points (0.42%) to 79,724, while the Nifty 50 added 99 points (0.41%) to 24,304.
