-Despite the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) supporting the spread of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) across the country, there has been a decline in its use in the recent months due to the sharp increase in its price. -Even though LPG is a fossil fuel, from the environment and health points of view, the benefits of its use as a cooking fuel, are better than its alternatives. -Promoting carbon credits for LPG use, roping in other governmental and non-governmental entities to contribute to the LPG subsidy basket and expanding microfinance via a digital LPG bank, could be some innovative ways of providing financial support for those in need, without adding to the national government’s subsidy burden. But why should we care if a fossil fuel like LPG loses mainstream (numero uno) status as a cooking fuel? In times when ‘fossil fuel ban’ is a buzzword for those vocal about climate and development, should we not celebrate when the government is withdrawing subsidies on fossil fuel, making it too expensive for people, leading them to ditch it? Is this not exactly what pro-climate people should cheer for?
