Japanese electronics powerhouse Murata Manufacturing has officially launched production at its first Indian facility, located in the OneHub Chennai Industrial Park in Tamil Nadu.
The 3,500-square-meter plant will package and ship multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs), a key component used in smartphones, electric vehicles, industrial machines, and even NASA’s Mars helicopter.
Murata is a major supplier to Apple, with its MLCCs used extensively in iPhones, alongside other leading brands like Samsung and Sony.
The new unit marks Murata’s manufacturing debut in India and is a part of its broader push to diversify production beyond Japan, where about 60% of its MLCC output is currently based. That share is expected to fall to 50% as the company ramps up global capacity, including in India.
Welcoming the company to Tamil Nadu, state Industries Minister TRB Rajaa called it a major win for India’s high-tech ambitions.
“A global leader in advanced electronic components, with a 40% share in multilayer ceramic capacitors, whose parts power everything from smartphones to NASA’s Mars helicopter, they are right here in Tamil Nadu.”
“Chennai and its surrounding districts today form one of the most integrated EMS clusters in Asia, with capabilities ranging from printed circuit board assembly to final product integration. Our matching electronics components manufacturing scheme will only accelerate this momentum and bring many more such global players into the state,” he said.
Murata’s investment is part of a larger wave of Japanese trust in Tamil Nadu. Japanese companies have truly made our state their second home, he said.
Founded in 1944 and headquartered in Kyoto, Murata is a global leader in ceramic-based passive components and electronic solutions. Its expansive product lineup includes MLCCs, inductors, EMI filters, RF modules, piezo sensors, power supplies, and industrial automation components. The company posted $11.36 billion in revenue in FY2023 and employs around 73,000 people globally.
The new India plant comes amid a global surge in electronics demand across sectors like smartphones, EVs, healthcare, and industrial systems. In June 2025, Murata began mass production of the world’s first 0805-inch size MLCC, reinforcing its lead in component miniaturisation.
Murata operates 24 subsidiaries in Japan and 52 overseas, with a presence across India, China, the Americas, and Europe. The company is listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
