It’s been just about a year since Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree DLC launched, and Japanese game developer FromSoftware has been quick to heap another offering on the plates of souls hungering for more of the Lands Between in the form of Elden Ring: Nightreign. It is a different Elden Ring experience this time, with some changes in gameplay and building your preferred warrior, amongst other things. So, before you buy the new Elden Ring game, here are 10 things you should know.
Elden Ring Nightreign: Genre
Elden Ring: Nightreign is a 3-player co-op dark fantasy action survival game developed by FromSoftware and Bandai Namco.
Elden Ring Nightreign: The world
Elden Ring Nightreign is set in the fictional country of Limveld in the Elden Ring universe. Limveld is “a transitory land, buffeted by the raging might of the Nightlords.”
The Night’s Tide
If you are to succeed at Elden Ring Nightreign, you need to survive three full days in the game world, meaning three day-and-night cycles. If you survive the daytime, you’ll have to face the Night's Tide, which forces you to take the fight to the Elden Ring Nightreign bosses by diminishing the size of the map.
Defeat the Nightlords to end the reign of night
As per the developers, the Nightlords in the FromSoftware game are “enormous beings” that “lurk beyond the reach of most mortals and only reveal themselves when their commanders are defeated after two consecutive nights. Each Nightlord must be faced and defeated before the reign of night can be ended!”
Elden Ring Nightreign: Number of players
Elden Ring: Nightreign is designed for three-player co-op play. If you wish, you can still play Elden Ring Nightreign solo and try to take on the bosses on your own.
Not a DLC
Elden Ring Nightreign is not an Elden Ring DLC. It is a standalone multiplayer adventure meant for cooperative gameplay.
A copy of Elden Ring is not required
You don’t need a copy of Elden Ring to play Nightreign, as it is a standalone game.
No crossplay support, only cross-generation support
Elden Ring Nightreign does not come with crossplay support. However, it does offer cross-generation support, which means that PS5 players can play with PS4 players and Xbox Series X|S players with Xbox One players.
Elden Ring Nightreign characters can’t be designed from scratch
Elden Ring Nightreign features eight unique characters: Duchess, Executer, Guardian, Ironeye, Raider, Recluse, Revenant and Wylder. They are the Nightfarers and can’t be built up from scratch, which means your freedom to design a character your way is curtailed in Elden Ring: Nightreign.

Elden Ring Nightreign launched on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC on May 30, 2025.
