While investors watch the equity markets plunge, nearly 400 million Hindus readily take the plunge on the sacred banks of the Sangam in Prayagraj, seeking Moksha.
The Mahakumbh Mela, occurring after a rare celestial alignment that happens only once every 144 years, is poised to be the largest gathering of humanity in history. This monumental event is anticipated to attract over 400 million participants from 75 countries, promising not only spiritual fulfilment but also a substantial economic boost for both the state of Uttar Pradesh and the nation.
According to a KPMG report, India's tourism sector contributes significantly to the economy, accounting for 9.2 percent of the GDP and generating more than 42 million jobs, representing 8.1 percent of total employment in 2023. In 2022 alone, Indian pilgrimage sites welcomed approximately 1.43 billion domestic tourists, alongside 6.64 million international visitors. This marks a remarkable recovery from the pandemic years when visitor numbers plummeted to just over 1 million in 2020.
Religious tourism constitutes nearly 60 percent of all tourism in India, a figure expected to rise as the government invests in developing religious sites. Notably, 10 out of India's 42 UNESCO World Heritage Sites are categorised under religious heritage. The resurgence of spiritual tourism post-pandemic is evident; for instance, the Vaishno Devi Temple now sees daily pilgrim numbers soar from 10,000-15,000 before the pandemic to between 32,000 and 40,000 today. Similarly, Kerala's Guruvayur Temple has increased daily visitors from around 4,000 to between 6,000 and 7,000. In comparison, Ayodhya receives around 1-1.5 lakh visitors daily.
Following renovations at the Kailash Vishwanath Temple, Varanasi experienced a surge in visitors, attracting 71.6 million in 2022 and an estimated 130 million in 2023. This success has inspired similar renovation projects across other significant religious sites, like Ujjain.
India boasts of over 450,000 religious and cultural heritage sites that draw millions annually; however, events like the Mahakumbh elevate this phenomenon to an extraordinary scale.
With projections estimating over 400 million visitors and business opportunities worth Rs 3 lakh crore, Mahakumbh is set to create sustainable livelihoods for around 45,000 families. Local vendors, transport operators, hoteliers, and sellers of religious memorabilia are expected to benefit significantly from this influx.
Under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's Tourism Policy-2022, the state aims to align with this transformative vision by attracting Rs 20,000 crore in investments and creating one million jobs.
The potential for religious tourism as a catalyst for economic activity cannot be overstated; by 2030, KPMG forecasts that over one hundred million people will find employment through India's spiritual tourism sector alone—projected to reach a value of approximately $59 billion by 2028.
In contrast to cities in the US, where mayors often invite celebrity performers to stimulate local economies, India's rich tapestry of spiritual heritage offers a more profound opportunity for growth and prosperity—one that can be nurtured for sustained economic benefits.
The Mahakumbh Mela stands not only as a testament to faith but also as a beacon of economic potential for Uttar Pradesh and beyond.
