WhatsApp captured SMS biz from telcos: Tech Mahindra

The global markets are buzzing with Facebook's acquisition of WhatsApp for a whopping USD 19 billion - but astronomical valuations aside, Indian IT services firms are thrilled about innovation-led companies taking center stage and what it means for the industry. CNBC-TV18 caught up with Tech Mahindra's COO Amitava Roy who said that its unique service offering by WhatsApp made it an attractive proposition for Facebook.

He says merger and acquisitions is an area Tech Mahindra is looking at in terms of its 2015 goal but at the same time organic growing is also very important for the company.

Roy also adds that WhatsApp has really shaken the world in terms of, in a way they actually captured the SMS business from the telecoms and today they have been growing at a phenomenal pace.“Given that, its also an opportunity FB saw in terms of actually acquiring that company and getting the brand also along with it,” he adds.
