Vedanta expands alumina refining capacity to 3.5 mtpa

The firm commissioned a new 1.5 mtpa alumina refinery facility in Odisha, and the expansion is a significant step in the firm’s efforts to be among the top three producers of the world

Overall, the new addition will take the nameplate capacity at the Lanjigarh refinery from an existing 2 mtpa to 5 mtpa, the firm said

Vedanta Aluminium on April 3 successfully commissioned a 1.5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) facility at its alumina refinery in Lanjigarh, Odisha. This additional capacity, which is part of an existing 3 mtpa plant, will take expand the firm’s capacity to 3.5 mtpa, the company said in an exchange filing.

The expansion is a significant step in the firm’s efforts to be among the top three producers of the world, it said.

Overall, the new addition will take the nameplate capacity at the Lanjigarh refinery from an existing 2 mtpa to 5 mtpa.

John Slaven, CEO, Vedanta Aluminium, said, "We are delighted to commission the expanded capacity which strengthens our raw material security and reduces costs for our Jharsuguda and BALCO aluminium smelters. It is a significant step towards 100% vertical integration and strongly positions us for sustainable growth within the global aluminium market."
