Treat aluminium as core metal; increase import duty:Vedanta

After Hindalco's stand on Tuesday, Vedanta has also raised concerns over the issues faced by the aluminium sector. Abhijit Pati, CEO Aluminum, Vedanta says falling international prices have been the biggest issue for the aluminuim sector.Speaking to CNBC-TV18, Pati says aluminium’s London Metal Exchange (LME) price has slid down to sub1600 level, one of the lowest level of 6 yrs. “Aluminium needs to be treated as core metal because of its application versatility and flexibility of the future metal,” he says. He appeals to the government that the import duty be increased to around 10 percent from 5 percent to protect the domestic market from unnecessary import.
