A year after a month-long strike at the Tata Motors Sanand plant in Gujarat, the woes pertaining to salaries of workers still seem to be continuing. Workers at the plant allege that the Tata Motors management has resorted to misleading tactics like last year’s suspension of 26 employees and supervisors are issuing other threats, according to a report in The Financial Express.
To resolve the issues, the Gujarat government’s labour department had called in a meeting with the plant’s worker unions on Thursday but failed to resolve the conflict. The next meeting is scheduled on March 15.
According to the report, workers claim that Sanand plant supervisors have been threatening members of Bharatiya Kamdaar Ekta Manch which was formed last year after the strike. Besides, the workers also say the company favours contract workers who have been brought from other parts of the country.
Permanent workers with, at least 7 years of service with the plant, say their salaries haven’t been increased since 2015 and the most one could earn is Rs 12,000 which is barely enough to pull through the month.
