Snapping 3-month declining streak, passenger car sales in India rose 1.87 percent in April on popular new models like Maruti Baleno and Renault Kwid, although a subdued rural market continued to affect the overall sentiment.
According to the data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), domestic passenger car sales stood at 1,62,566 units in April as against 1,59,588 units in the same month last year.
"If we talk only about cars then growth during the last month largely came from new launches like Baleno and Kwid," SIAM Director General Vishnu Mathur told reporters here.
Rural sales for cars continue to be subdued, he added.
"If we see the total passenger vehicle segment, it has grown by over 11 percent. It is mainly due to the robust growth of utility vehicles like Hyundai Creta, Maruti Vitara Brezza and vehicles like Mahindra's KUV100," Mathur said.
The distinction between passenger cars and SUVs is getting more blurred, he added.
During last month total passenger vehicle sales rose by 11.04 percent to 2,42,060 units as against 2,17,989 units in the year ago period.
Utility vehicles grew by 42.82 percent in April. The segment has been growing since October last year, Mathur said.
