In a twist to Vedanta's case for mining in Niyamgiri, Orissa, the company has withdrawn its case at the National Green Tribunal.

Vedanta had filed case challenging denial of environmental clearance by the environment ministry. Vedanta is still awaiting the Supreme Court's judgment for denial of forest clearance. In August 2007, Vedanta (VAL) had applied for expansion of its refinery capacity in from 1 to 6 MTPA and captive power plant from 75 to 300 MW. Since last year, it has faced wrath of the Union Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) on the issue of expansion of its aluminium refinery and also denied permission to mine bauxite at Niyamgiri in Orissa.
