India's largest commercial vehicle maker Tata Motors' total sales in May rose 4% year-on-year to 64,347 vehicles, as strong growth in LCV sales and Tata Nano offset slowdown in demand for medium and heavy trucks and the Indica, Indigo range of cars. While, its total sales in the domestic market rose 6% to 60,128 units, exports slumped 24% to 4,219 units. Last month, Tata Motors sold 39,625 CVs, up 7% from a year ago. LCV sales surged 26%, but M&HCV sales were down 20%, hurt by the overall economic slowdown. Its total passenger vehicle sales in May were up 6% to 20,503 units. Sales of the Nano surged 31% to 8,507 units. However, sales of the Indigo sedan slumped 20% and Indica sales fell 1%. Sales of utility vehicles like Sumo, Safari, Aria and Venture were flat at 3,132 units. Tata Motors' uitility vehicle rival Mahindra & Mahindra had earlier reported 28% growth in May sales at 43,988 units. Tata Motors' total cumulative sales over April and May are down 2% at 1,24,433 units. The stock was down 4.4% at Rs 222.85 on NSE in late afternoon trading.
