The Maharashtra government has prepared a draft of a new housing policy and its thrust is on affordable housing.
The overarching objective of the state government’s policy is inline with the Centre’s ‘Housing for All’ programme. The policy aims to create 11 lakh houses in Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and 8 lakh houses in the rest of Maharashtra by 2022.
The major objective of the policy is to create land bank for affordable housing and government will periodically introduce the supply of land for housing. The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) will be preparing the master plan for the land bank.
While experts have welcomed the target set by the government, they believe the implementation for the same will be challenging.
