There seems to be no end in sight to the cross-border slugfest between the taxman and corporates.
British brewer SabMiller has moved the Bombay High Court claiming that the taxman crossed the line by passing a demand order on the Rs 550 crore Fosters deal. Sabmiller acquired Fosters India (an asset of Fosters Australia) in 2006 thus qualifying into the cross-border tax case genre. CNBC-TV18's Ashwin Mohan now learns that the Bombay High Court might have just given SabMiller some relief from the income tax department till June 13. Sources close to the development said the company has filed two writ petitions against the I-T department's orders, where the department claimed jurisdiction on the deal and sought Rs 183 crore as tax. The plea of the London-listed beer giant challenges the I-T department's jurisdiction on the deal and says that no rights were transferred through this.
