Coffee has evolved into a luxury experience for connoisseurs around the world. While most of us enjoy a daily brew from our local café, a select group of rare and exotic coffees are commanding premium prices thanks to their unique origins, unconventional processing methods, and limited availability. What drives a coffee to cost hundreds of dollars per pound is a mix of scarcity, labor-intensive cultivation, unique terroir, and delicate processing. From volcanic slopes to isolated islands, from jungle-understory farms to private estates, each variety tells a story that goes far beyond caffeine.

Here are 10 most costliest coffee around the world:

Sourced from the mountainous regions of northern Thailand, Black Ivory Coffee is among the rarest coffees and among the most unique in the world. The difference is in the processing method: the Arabica beans are eaten by elephants; the beans are then fermented naturally during digestion and subsequently collected. This unique enzymatic action results in coffee that is exceptionally smooth, low in acidity, and effused with subtle chocolate, tamarind, and spice flavors.
Finca El Injerto is a coffee grown on volcanic soil at high elevation in Guatemala, which contributes to its exceptional and distinctive flavor. The beans are small and dense, and are washed in pure mountain spring water and are then sun-dried. Finca El Injerto produces premium micro-lots of beans, which means they are individually processed and sorted, and frequently win awards at international coffee auctions.
Hacienda La Esmeralda is located in the Boquete area of Panama and is known for producing the world-famous Gesha variety. The beans are grown under the shade of guava trees, which add floral aspects and fruit-forward notes to the flavor. The brewed cup often contains flavors of jasmine, bergamot, and tropical fruits, and has a light tea-like body.

Kopi Luwak is arguably the most renowned luxury coffee in the world, derived from beans eaten and later excreted by civet cats in Indonesia. During digestion, naturally occurring fermentation enzymes chemically alter the structure, resulting in a coffee that is less bitter and has increased smoothness. Once fetched, the beans are cleaned, roasted, and brewed, producing a coffee that is earthy, and has low acidity.
Produced on the isolated volcanic island of Saint Helena in the South Atlantic Ocean, this coffee benefits from nutrient-rich soils and a mild maritime climate. Due to these conditions, the beans are produced in small quantities, or “micro-lots,” and harvested by hand and processed using traditional methods.
This coffee is produced exclusively on the Hawaiian island of Molokai in volcanic soils and unique coastal microclimate. Family farms cultivate this coffee, attending each step of the process with great care and quality control. The flavor of Molokai Coffee produces a well-balanced cup with nutty undertones, tropical fruit notes, and a delicate body.
Frequently called the champagne of coffee, Jamaican Blue Mountain is grown in the high heights of the Blue Mountains. The cooler growing temperatures associate with higher elevations mean the beans grow a bit slower, allowing for complex flavors to develop without bitterness. Known for its smooth body, mild acidity, and bright florals, this coffee has a somewhat cult following, particularly in Japan.

The farm grows its beans without synthetic pesticides and carefully hand picks the beans at harvest, itself a labor intensive process. This coffee has flavor notes of berry, sugarcane and chocolate, with a rich mouthfeel.
Los Planes coffee is grown in the Chalatenango mountains in El Salvador and it has won numerous international competition accolades. The farm employs environmentally friendly growing practices and processes the beans using washed and honey processes. This coffee can be characterized as bright and complex, featuring tasting notes of plum, citrus, and milk chocolate.

The Blue Bourbon varietal is recognized for its clean taste, medium body and vibrant citrus acidity.
