With the Indian summer in full swing, it's time to gear up and protect yourselves from the scorching sun. And, with the right tools at your disposal, you can confidently face the sun without worrying about damaging your skin. This is where a sunscreen comes in - one of the most important weapons in your sun-defence arsenal. Selecting an appropriate sunscreen, like one with full-light technology, is among the most effective methods of protecting your skin from harmful UV rays. Here are some expert sunscreen tips from Dr Aparna Santhanam, dermatologist and skin care expert, ITC Dermafique, to help you get the most of your sunscreen this season.

Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with full light technology: To choose the right sunscreen, one must know its benefits. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to shield your skin from both UVA and UVB rays. Additionally, look for water-resistant formulations, especially in India's humid climate, to maintain protection while sweating or swimming. Dr. Santhanam adds, selecting a sunscreen equipped with full light technology becomes imperative. This advanced feature not only shields against UVA and UVB rays but also provides defence against harmful infrared rays and visible light. By employing this technology, it effectively combats tanning, stubborn pigmentation, and premature aging resulting from sun exposure.

Check the SPF and PA rating: Different types of sunlight exist, with UVA and UVB being the most harmful to your skin. UVB rays cause sunburn, while UVA rays accelerate skin aging, resulting in wrinkles and age spots. When buying sunscreen, you can measure against UVB rays and UVA rays by checking the SPF and the PA rating, which is measured in plus signs.

Re-application is key: It is advised to apply your sunscreen 15-20 minutes prior to sun exposure, allowing the sunscreen to be absorbed by the skin. Reapplication is non-negotiable and necessary as the effectiveness of sunscreen decreases over time due to outer forces as well as UV rays. You should reapply every two hours, or immediately after swimming or sweating profusely. Never forget to reapply after toweling off, as water can diminish the sunscreen’s efficacy.
