Coffee culture has boomed in recent years, and for those on the go, disposable paper cups are now the order of the day, increasingly used by busy professionals as well as tourists. As handy as they are, these cups aren't as innocent as you might think. Most disposable coffee cups are coated with a thin layer of plastic to help keep liquid from leaking out, but it can degrade into microplastic particles when heated by a hot beverage. Microplastics are extremely small pieces of plastic that can be eaten and taken into the body.

Regularly sipping from paper cups has been found to cause microplastic exposure, which can build up in the body over time, studies have shown. While research is continuing, scientists worry about the potential health risks, including hormonal disruption and inflammation and damage to the digestive system. The frequent consumption of microplastics carries additional health risks for sensitive groups such as children, expectant mothers or people with prior health problems.

Dr Anil Verma, an environmental toxicologist in Bengaluru says, “Disposable paper cups may be convenient, but when they come into contact with hot liquids, they leach microplastics. Ultimately, high intake of any of these has been linked with the risk for cellular stress, inflammation - and even hormonal disruption Switching to reusable cups or mugs is an easy, effective way to minimize exposure.”
