Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic gastrointestinal disorder characterised by symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, gas, diarrhoea, and constipation. The exact cause of IBS is unknown, but it is believed to involve a combination of abnormal gut motility, increased sensitivity to pain, and imbalances in gut bacteria.
