As women age, subtle signs begin to emerge, from hormonal shifts and fatigue to changes in skin, mood, and menstrual patterns. These are your body’s way of signalling it’s time to adapt.
Catching concerns early and maintaining consistent care can help avoid complications down the line. “Every decade demands attention to specific health aspects, from menstruation and fertility to bone strength and cardiovascular risk,” says Dr Manjula NV, Consultant, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Ramaiah Memorial Hospital.
Health is not the same for everyone, it should fit your age and needs. “A 25-year-old woman’s needs differ vastly from those of a woman in her forties or sixties. What remains consistent, however, is the importance of regular screenings, a balanced lifestyle, and mental wellbeing,” says Dr Manjula.

Dr Manjula shares what to focus on at every age:
- In your 20s:
Your 20s are ideal for building healthy habits. Focus on good nutrition, regular exercise, and stress management. Begin annual health check-ups and get familiar with your cycle. “Now is the time to understand your body, establish a menstrual health baseline, and learn about contraception and STI prevention,” says Dr Manjula.
- In your 30s:
This decade is often about juggling, work, relationships, and possibly motherhood. Fertility awareness becomes more important. Don’t skip cervical screenings and breast self-checks. “Don’t overlook mental health, burnout is common in this age group,” cautions Dr Manjula.

Perimenopause can begin, and hormone fluctuations become more noticeable. Track changes in sleep, energy, and mood. Bone and heart health need attention. “This is a critical time to stay active and maintain a nutrient-rich diet, particularly in calcium and vitamin D,” advises Dr Manjula.
- In your 50s:
Menopause brings big changes, physically and emotionally. Watch for symptoms like hot flushes and sleep disruption. Explore options like hormone therapy with your doctor. “Continue regular screenings, especially for breast cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular risk,” says Dr Manjula.
