Self-care is essential. It helps you maintain good health, lends a positive outlook on life, and supports the balance between work and personal life. Achieving this balance leads to greater satisfaction in both areas, making you feel more focused and energised.
The hectic pace of modern life makes it easy to feel tired and overwhelmed by the endless personal and professional demands, says Honey Gudh, ICF Certified MCC Credentialed Life Coach, Head Coach Trainer, and Co-founder of Cocoweave Coaching International. “This is where personal care, or self-care, comes in. Self-care begins with setting boundaries and making positive lifestyle changes, among other factors.”
Gudh shares effective tips on practicing self-care for a balanced work and personal life:
- Set clear boundaries: Follow the divide-and-rule theory by dedicating specific times for both personal and professional goals. The key is to stick to it. Ensure your workplace is aware of your work hours and does not disturb you during your personal time. Make it a habit not to discuss work once you’re home.
- Always connect with friends and family: If you find it challenging to maintain a work-life balance, prioritise human connection. Reach out to someone, it can be a friend, a family member, or therapist. It makes it easier to talk things through. Besides, egaging with others can rejuvenate you, whether it’s a phone call, a dinner, or even a weekend getaway. Make an effort to be present in the moment and set aside work-related worries.
- Make lifestyle modifications: One of the most effective ways to practice self-care is by modifying your lifestyle. Begin by focusing on your physical health: stay active, whether that means practicing yoga, doing Pilates, hitting the gym, or simply going for a walk. When you prioritise your physical well-being, your mental and emotional health naturally improves. Additionally, getting sufficient sleep is essential; aim for 7 to 9 hours each night. Don’t forget to maintain a nutritious diet rich in whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, and healthy fats.
- Take regular breaks: Mental exhaustion can set in quickly when you skip regular breaks, and this can significantly affect your productivity. To combat this, try the ‘Pomodoro technique’, which says work for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break. After completing four of these cycles, take a longer break of 15 to 30 minutes to recharge and refresh yourself.
