Increased humidity, dust, and allergens in the air can heighten the risk of eye infections, particularly conjunctivitis. This highly contagious condition can affect people of all ages, leading to discomfort and potential complications if not managed properly.

With children being especially vulnerable due to their playful nature and habits, it’s essential to adopt preventive measures. By understanding the risks and implementing effective eye care strategies, people can safeguard their vision and ensure a healthy experience during the rainy season. ENT Specialist Dr Vinay Kumar suggests eight effective ways to keep your eyes safe from conjunctivitis and other eye infections during the monsoon season:


Maintaining good hygiene is crucial in preventing the spread of conjunctivitis. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before touching your face or eyes. Avoid sharing personal items such as towels or eye makeup, and use disposable tissues when necessary to minimise germ transmission.
Prolonged screen time can cause eye strain and discomfort, especially during the monsoon when visibility may be affected by weather conditions. Take regular breaks using the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This helps reduce eye fatigue and keeps your eyes comfortable.
Protect your eyes from rain, wind, and debris by wearing sunglasses or protective eyewear when outdoors. This helps shield your eyes from irritants that can cause conjunctivitis. Opt for wraparound sunglasses for better protection against environmental elements.

A clean living environment reduces the risk of eye infections. Regularly clean surfaces in your home, especially in common areas, using disinfectants to kill bacteria and viruses. Pay special attention to areas like kitchens and bathrooms, where germs can thrive.

If you must touch your eyes for any reason, ensure your hands are clean to minimise the risk of infection. Proper hydration and a balanced diet are essential for overall health, including eye health. Drink plenty of water and consume foods rich in vitamins A, C, and omega-3 fatty acids, such as carrots, spinach, fish, and citrus fruits. These nutrients support healthy vision and strengthen the immune system.
If you wear contact lenses, consider taking a break during the monsoon season. Moisture can accumulate under lenses, creating a breeding ground for bacteria. If you must wear them, ensure they are properly cleaned and replace them regularly to prevent infections.
If you experience any symptoms of conjunctivitis—such as redness, itching, or discharge—seek medical attention promptly. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential to prevent the condition from worsening and to protect your eye health. Do not ignore symptoms, as timely intervention can help ensure a quick recovery.
