Ageing causes your body to undergo various changes, and some of these can affect your eyesight. One of the most common vision issues among older adults is age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a condition that can significantly impair central vision. As you age, slight vision changes are expected, but with AMD, these can become much more drastic. Reading a newspaper or your phone may become difficult, as words in the middle of the page seem to fade or warp. Also, once-simple activities like cooking or sewing become frustrating as you struggle to see fine details. These are all signs that the macula, responsible for sharp vision, is deteriorating, making everyday tasks increasingly difficult.

Age-related macular degeneration is one of the leading causes of vision impairment, particularly affecting older adults, says Dr Mandeep Singh Basu, Director of Dr. Basu Eye Care & Jagat Pharma. "It impacts the macula, the central part of the retina, which is essential for sharp, detailed vision. This condition can severely limit daily activities like reading, driving, and recognizing faces, greatly affecting quality of life," he adds.

Ayurveda, Dr Basu suggests, can offer solutions for managing AMD and preserving vision. "By addressing the root cause and supporting eye health, Ayurveda provides natural and hopeful approaches for those seeking complementary therapies," he says.

Several factors including ageing, genetics, smoking, and a diet lacking in essential nutrients, contribute to the development of AMD. “From an Ayurvedic standpoint, AMD is often associated with an imbalance of the body’s doshas, particularly Pitta dosha, which governs heat and inflammation. Managing this imbalance is crucial for protecting and rejuvenating the eyes,” he suggests.

The following herbs, according to Dr Basu, help reduce inflammation and nourish the eyes.
