Hypothyroidism refers to reduced levels of the thyroid hormones in the body. It usually presents with long-term fatigue and persistent low energy levels, as the metabolic activity is reduced. The affected individuals often feel tired and sleepy, even after adequate amounts of sleep. This is one of the most common and earliest symptoms of hypothyroidism.

Another feature commonly reported by people with hypothyroidism is weight gain, which is usually mild and occurs because of accumulation of fluid, as compared to fat. Despite reduced appetite, the affected individual may notice increased body weight. Once the person begins medical therapy, the weight reduces to normal.
