Athlete's foot is a common fungal infection that affects the skin on the feet, particularly in the spaces between the toes. It's caused by various types of fungi, most commonly by the same fungi that cause ringworm and jock itch.
The fungi thrive in warm, moist environments, making sweaty feet, tight shoes, and damp socks common factors contributing to its development. Athlete's foot is highly contagious and can spread through direct contact with infected skin or by contact with surfaces contaminated with the fungi, such as floors or towels, says Hyderabad based skin specialist Roshni Nagar.
Symptoms of athlete's foot include:
- Itching, burning, or stinging between the toes or on the soles of the feet.
- Redness and scaling of the affected skin.
- Blisters or ulcers that may ooze fluid.
- Dry, flaky skin on the bottoms or sides of the feet.
- Cracked or peeling skin, especially in severe cases.
Athlete's foot can be uncomfortable and persistent, but there are several home remedies you can try to alleviate symptoms and promote healing:
Apple cider vinegar soak: Mix one part apple cider vinegar with three parts warm water and soak your feet in this solution for 15-20 minutes daily. Apple cider vinegar has antifungal properties that can help fight the infection.
Tea tree oil: Dilute tea tree oil with a carrier oil like coconut oil or olive oil and apply it directly to the affected areas two to three times a day. Tea tree oil has natural antifungal properties that can help kill the fungus causing athlete's foot.
Garlic: Crush a few garlic cloves and mix them with olive oil to create a paste. Apply this paste to the affected areas and leave it on for 30 minutes before rinsing off with warm water. Garlic contains allicin, a compound with antifungal properties.
Baking soda soak: Add a few tablespoons of baking soda to warm water and soak your feet in this solution for 15-20 minutes. Baking soda can help neutralise pH levels on the skin, making it less hospitable for fungi.
Coconut oil: Apply coconut oil directly to the affected areas several times a day. Coconut oil has antifungal properties and can also help moisturise the skin, which is beneficial for relieving itching and preventing the infection from spreading.
Cornstarch or talcum powder: Keep your feet dry by sprinkling cornstarch or talcum powder on them, especially in between the toes. This helps absorb moisture and prevents the fungus from thriving in damp conditions.
Saltwater soak: Dissolve a handful of salt in warm water and soak your feet in it for 10-15 minutes. Salt has antifungal properties and can help relieve itching and burning associated with athlete's foot.
Proper foot hygiene: Wash your feet daily with soap and water, and make sure to dry them thoroughly, especially in between the toes. Avoid walking barefoot in public places to prevent the spread of the infection.
Remember that while these home remedies can be effective for mild cases of athlete's foot, severe or persistent infections may require medical treatment. If your symptoms don't improve or worsen despite trying home remedies, consult a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and treatment.
