Lion’s mane mushroom (Hericium erinaceus) is a distinctive fungus known for its unique, mane-like appearance with long, white spines. Unlike common mushrooms like button or portobello, which have a conventional cap-and-stem structure, lion’s mane grows in clusters on decaying wood and has a seafood-like flavour. It’s notable for its potential cognitive and neurological benefits, including enhancing memory, protecting against neurodegenerative diseases, and supporting mental health, thanks to compounds like hericenones and erinacines. In contrast, common mushrooms are valued for general nutrition and immune support. While lion’s mane is used in gourmet cooking and speciality dishes, common mushrooms are versatile ingredients in a wide range of culinary applications. This unique combination of appearance, health benefits, and culinary use sets lion’s mane apart from more familiar mushroom varieties.

Dr Arvind Kumar, from the Department of Neurology at Felix Global, highlights the diverse health benefits of the lion’s mane mushroom, based on both traditional use and emerging scientific research:

Neuroprotection: It has neuroprotective properties that could help guard against neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation.
