High cholesterol in women in their 50s may quietly accumulate in the arteries over time, forming plaque and gradually narrowing the blood vessels. This process, known as atherosclerosis, can progress unnoticed for years. Despite the absence of obvious symptoms, the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular issues steadily increases. Therefore, regular health screenings to monitor cholesterol levels are crucial, especially as women age.

Lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, and smoking cessation play significant roles in managing cholesterol levels and reducing cardiovascular risk, says Felix hospital endocrinologists Piyali Banerjee. Signs that may indicate high cholesterol levels in women in their 50s include-:

Angina or chest pain: High cholesterol can lead to the buildup of plaque in the arteries, restricting blood flow to the heart and causing chest pain or discomfort, known as angina.

Shortness of breath: Reduced blood flow to the heart due to narrowed arteries can result in shortness of breath, especially during physical exertion, says Banerjee.
