Stem cell therapy, which is also known as regenerative medicine, is a treatment that promotes the natural repair response of diseased, dysfunctional or injured tissues by using stem cells or their derivatives. With to the recent advancements in medical science, this therapy is gaining popularity in India. With more clinics offering these treatments, India is becoming a hub for professional stem cell therapy.

Stem cell therapy is a potentially effective way to treat cancer by using stem cells to restore or repair damaged tissues. It is possible to guide the targeting of stem cells towards cancer cells, hence reducing damage to healthy tissue. Moreover, they can alter immune function to strengthen anti-cancer defences.

What is stem cell?

The process of stem cell therapy begins with the isolation of stem cells, which can be sourced from various reservoirs such as bone marrow, adipose tissue, or embryonic tissue, says Dr Aravind Badiger, Technical Director, BDR Pharmaceuticals. These stem cells are then cultured and manipulated in the laboratory to enhance their therapeutic properties, he says.
