All you need to know about urinary tract infection in women

These infections are usually brought on by bacteria getting into the urinary tract. Among all UTI cases, women are disproportionately affected, with roughly half experiencing at least one UTI episode in their lifetime. Because of the shorter urethra in women's urinary tracts than in men's, bacteria can more easily enter the bladder, making women more vulnerable to infections, says Dr Vikas Jain, consultant and HOD - Urology, robotic surgery and kidney transplantation, Manipal hospital, Dwarka.

In addition, women are more susceptible to UTIs due to hormonal changes, such as variations in estrogen levels during menstruation and menopause, which can affect the urine environment, says Jain who also suggests some preventive measures.
