Adenoids are small patches of tissue located at the back of the nasal cavity, play a crucial role in the immune system by trapping harmful bacteria and viruses, says Dr Vijay Verma, consultant allergy & ENT specialist at CK Birla hospital, Gurugram. However, when inflamed or enlarged, they can obstruct nasal passages, leading to a myriad of issues such as difficulty breathing or breathing from mouth, nose block snoring, recurrent sinus infections, and even sleep apnea, he says. In children, whose immune systems are still developing, adenoid problems can significantly impact their overall well-being.

The seasonal variations in India, characterised by hot summers, monsoon rains, and chilly winters, present unique challenges for children with adenoid issues. During the hot and humid months, such as the sweltering summer, adenoid inflammation tends to worsen due to increased exposure to allergens like dust, pollen, and pollution. This can trigger symptoms like nasal congestion, persistent coughing, and throat irritation, making it uncomfortable for children to breathe freely.

Conversely, the onset of monsoon brings its own set of challenges. The high humidity levels coupled with mold and fungal spores in the air can aggravate adenoid-related symptoms, leading to recurrent sinus infections and exacerbating breathing difficulties. Moreover, children are often prone to catching viral infections during this season, further compromising their respiratory health.
