Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty is set to receive the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Indian cinema. The announcement was made by Union Minister for Railways, Information and Broadcasting, and Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, on X (formerly Twitter).
“Mithun Da’s remarkable cinematic journey inspires generations! Honoured to announce that the Dadasaheb Phalke Selection Jury has decided to award legendary actor, Sh. Mithun Chakraborty Ji for his iconic contribution to Indian Cinema.”
The award will be presented to Mithun Chakraborty at the 70th National Film Awards ceremony, scheduled to take place on October 8, 2024.
Born on June 16, 1950, Mithun Chakraborty began his illustrious acting career in 1977 with his debut film Mrigayaa, which earned him his first National Film Award for Best Actor. However, it was his 1982 blockbuster Disco Dancer that catapulted him to superstardom, making him a sensation across Asia, the Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Turkey, and Africa.
Throughout his career, Mithun Chakraborty has appeared in a multitude of films across various genres, including Agneepath, Mujhe Insaaf Chahiye, Hum Se Hai Zamana, Pasand Apni Apni, Ghar Ek Mandir, and Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki, among others. In more recent years, he has been seen in films like OMG: Oh My God.
Mithun Chakraborty has worked in over 270 to 300 films, building a diverse portfolio that spans Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Odia, Punjabi, and Bhojpuri cinema. His immense popularity overseas, especially in Eastern Europe and Russia, earned him the title of the "last superstar of Indian cinema."
In addition to his cinematic achievements, Mithun Chakraborty has won several National Film Awards and holds a Limca World Record for having the most film releases in a single year. He has also been actively involved in social causes, particularly raising awareness about thalassemia.

For over 30 years, he served as the chairman of the allied Muzdoor union and held the position of president of the Cine and TV Artists Association (CINTAA), championing the welfare of cine workers. Furthermore, Mithun has contributed significantly to promoting small and medium-budget films, providing a platform for emerging filmmakers, and inspiring youth with self-defence and fitness initiatives.
