Tamil actor-director Ranjith has ignited a firestorm of controversy with his recent comments on the horrific caste-based honour killing that took place in Salem, Tamil Nadu on August 9.
In a shocking statement to the media, Ranjith claimed that such killings are not acts of violence. Going further, he asserted that they represent a form of parental care. His justification of this heinous crime has drawn widespread condemnation and disbelief.
The incident unfolded in Salem's Karuppur, where Ranjith had gone to watch his film, 'Kavundampalayalam', with the audience. Following the screening, during an interaction with the media, he was questioned about the recent honour killing in the region.
To the shock of many, Ranjith defended the act, claiming it was not violence but a form of parental care. His film, 'Kavundampalayalam', had a limited release across Tamil Nadu on August 9th.

Ranjith had also made such comments in the past and was trolled by people for making such inflammatory statements. His previous comments about women's clothing at public events, coupled with his films' portrayal of women as submissive and traditional, highlight his regressive views.
