When people think of Bollywood stars and their big spends, the images that come to mind are usually high-end cars, sprawling homes, or million-dollar watches. But R. Madhavan’s most extravagant buy is none of those—and he’s proud of it.
In a conversation with Curly Tales, the actor revealed that his most expensive purchase wasn’t a luxury bungalow or a sports car, but a yacht. It’s not the stereotypical 75-foot Caribbean boat either, but a smaller one he keeps in Dubai. Madhavan admitted it was his biggest splurge, one he’s “not ashamed” of, and said he has no regrets about putting money into something that gives him joy.
The actor has also been candid about the financial realities of working in Bollywood. In another interview, he explained why Indian actors tend to be cautious about their choices. Unlike Hollywood, there are no residuals or royalties for actors here. Madhavan pointed out that if he had been a Hollywood actor, films like 3 Idiots, Rang De Basanti, and Tanu Weds Manu would have been enough to secure his family’s financial future for generations. He even cited Amrish Puri, who still receives royalties from his role in Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

For Madhavan, financial independence is not just about wealth, but about freedom. Speaking with film exhibitor Akshay Rathi, he noted how earlier generations of actors leaned heavily into real estate. Today’s stars, he said, are branching into VFX, production houses, beauty startups, and other ventures—moves that give them both security and the ability to choose projects based on passion rather than paycheck.
Madhavan has also spoken about dignity in the industry. He once remarked that senior actors should avoid romancing much younger heroines on screen, calling it “sleazy.” For him, career longevity comes from combining financial wisdom with thoughtful role choices.
On the work front, Madhavan was recently seen in Netflix’s romantic drama Aap Jaisa Koi with Fatima Sana Shaikh. His upcoming projects include De De Pyaar De 2 alongside Ajay Devgn and Rakul Preet Singh, and the Ranveer Singh-led drama Dhurandhar.
