Her daughters, Janhvi and Khushi Kapoor, had to confront an overwhelming grief while the world watched them cope with unimaginable pain.
In a recent episode of Koffee with Karan, Janhvi and Khushi opened up about that fateful day and shared how they found solace and strength in each other during this difficult time. The memories, still raw, brought to light the immense emotional burden they carried and how they supported each other through their shared loss.
Janhvi Kapoor recalled, “When I got the call, I was in my room, and I could hear wailing from Khushi’s room. I think I barged into her room howling and crying.” The emotional gravity of that moment weighed heavily on the sisters. It was not just the loss of a mother but the sudden realization of a world where they would have to go on without her presence.
“But what I do remember is, she looked at me, and the minute she looked at me, she stopped crying. She just stopped crying,” shared Janhvi. The strength of a bond between siblings was evident as Khushi, the younger of the two, immediately went from mourning her own loss to comforting her elder sister. “She sat next to me and started comforting me. And I have never seen her cry about it since,” Janhvi continued, expressing how Khushi’s strength and maturity shone through at that moment.
Khushi, on the other hand, revealed that despite being the youngest, she felt she had to “hold it together” for her family. “I think I felt like I had to hold it together for everyone because I feel like I have always been the strong one,” Khushi said, reflecting on the expectations and emotional weight placed on her shoulders.
The sisters also spoke about how, even though they get emotional about things, they rarely show it to each other. For Janhvi and Khushi, it has always been about finding strength within themselves and putting on a brave front for the other. “I think it took me a while to accept her new reality,” Khushi shared candidly. “It took me a while when it happened to kind of accept it. I think it did suddenly hit me after a while, but I was a little confused. I don’t know. But I had Janhvi, I had Dad, so they were just kind of there to help me,” she added.
During the show, Karan Johar mentioned an old interview where Sridevi had said that Khushi was “more emotionally equipped” for the film industry than Janhvi. Despite being younger, she was seen as more emotionally mature. Janhvi acknowledged how much the family dynamics have changed since their mother’s passing. “The dynamics have changed so much since she has passed. She is equally my baby and my mom at times. And I am equally her baby and her mom at times,” Janhvi said, elaborating on their changed roles and how they rely on each other for support and care.
