Tamil actor T. Ravichandran has approached the Madras High Court seeking anticipatory bail after an FIR was registered against him for allegedly issuing a death threat to actor-politician Kamal Haasan. The controversy erupted following Ravichandran’s remarks in an interview with a YouTube channel, where he strongly objected to Haasan’s choice of words on a political issue. During the interaction, Ravichandran went to the extent of warning that he would slit the parliamentarian’s throat if such remarks continued.
The threatening statement immediately triggered widespread criticism and alarm in political and film circles. Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) vice-president and retired IPS officer A.G. Mourya filed a formal complaint with the Greater Chennai Police Commissioner on August 10. Acting on the complaint, the matter was forwarded to the Central Crime Branch (CCB), which subsequently registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Ravichandran.
In his petition before the High Court, Ravichandran argued that the FIR had been registered without conducting a preliminary inquiry. He also claimed that he had not been informed about the specific crime number in the case. Emphasizing that he had no real intention of harming Haasan, Ravichandran described his remarks as a reaction made in the heat of the moment.

The actor further highlighted that he hailed from a “respectable family background” and had never been involved in any violent activities. He assured the court that he was willing to abide by any conditions it might impose while granting bail. His legal team maintained that custodial interrogation was unnecessary and that his cooperation with the investigation would not be in doubt.
The case has once again brought into focus the growing tensions between political discourse and personal attacks in Tamil Nadu. Observers point out that statements made by public figures on digital platforms can quickly spiral into controversies with serious legal consequences.
The Madras High Court, after hearing preliminary arguments, has directed the police to submit their response. The matter is scheduled to be taken up again on August 20, when the court will decide on Ravichandran’s plea for anticipatory bail.
