The juggernaut that is Superstar Rajinikanth continues to roll on. After a record-breaking opening day that saw his latest release Coolie shatter almost all Kollywood box office records, day 2 promised more cheers for the 74-year-old icon. As is common with mass entertainers from the south, the film witnessed a dip on the second day as the frenzy of fan clubs gave way to a more balanced family audience turnout. However, thanks to the Independence Day holiday, Coolie managed to hold strong and maintain impressive numbers.

According to Sacnilk, Coolie collected Rs 44.8 crore net in India on its second day. With this, the film’s domestic total has now reached Rs 109.8 crore in just two days. This feat makes Coolie the first Tamil film to cross the Rs 100 crore mark within two days, a record previously held by Leo and 2.0, both of which entered the club on their third day. While Coolie saw occupancy dip slightly in the Tamil and Telugu markets, its Hindi version registered a minor increase compared to its opening day, showing encouraging signs for the film’s pan-India run.

Meanwhile, competition has come in the form of War 2. The Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR-starrer improved on its opening day Rs 51.5 crore earnings by bringing in Rs 55.79 crore on day 2. This takes its total to Rs 107.29 crore, just a shade behind Coolie. With both films running neck-and-neck, the weekend collections are expected to set new benchmarks for Indian cinema.
