India is still grappling with the heartbreaking loss of Dharmendra, one of Hindi cinema’s brightest and most enduring stars. The Sholay legend passed away on Monday at the age of 89, leaving behind a tide of grief and remembrance that has swept across generations of fans.

Long before fitness culture became a staple in the industry, Dharmendra was admired for his natural athleticism. His strength never felt manufactured — it came naturally, shaped by his early years of playing sports and staying active.

Few know that before destiny led him to films, he had dreams rooted in the sporting world. Reflecting on his youth, he once told The Indian Express in 2011, “I used to play kabaddi and I was a runner too. I would have won an Olympic medal, but fate wanted me to be an actor and I am happy.”

In the final days before his passing, Dharmendra had been fighting health complications. On 12 November, he was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in South Mumbai after experiencing breathing difficulties.
