India is still grappling with the heartbreaking loss of Dharmendra, one of Hindi cinema’s brightest and most enduring stars. The Sholay legend passed away on Monday at the age of 89, leaving behind a tide of grief and remembrance that has swept across generations of fans.
Long before fitness culture became a staple in the industry, Dharmendra was admired for his natural athleticism. His strength never felt manufactured — it came naturally, shaped by his early years of playing sports and staying active.
Few know that before destiny led him to films, he had dreams rooted in the sporting world. Reflecting on his youth, he once told The Indian Express in 2011, “I used to play kabaddi and I was a runner too. I would have won an Olympic medal, but fate wanted me to be an actor and I am happy.”
In the final days before his passing, Dharmendra had been fighting health complications. On 12 November, he was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in South Mumbai after experiencing breathing difficulties.
For a brief moment, there was hope — his condition stabilised, and he was discharged, returning to his Juhu home to recover. But just days later, on November 24, he passed away peacefully, leaving the nation in mourning.
As the country remembers him, Dharmendra’s family has announced a prayer meet on November 27, giving fans, colleagues and loved ones a chance to gather, reflect and celebrate a life that touched millions.
According to a poster shared by Times of India, the meet will take place from 5 pm to 7:30 pm at the Seaside Lawns of Taj Lands End, Bandra — a tranquil setting overlooking the Arabian Sea, and a fitting place to honour a man whose presence felt like sunlight.
The tribute poster, titled “Celebration of Life,” features a young Dharmendra beaming at the camera. It is an image full of warmth, mischief and heart — qualities that defined him both on-screen and off.
Beneath it are the dates marking his extraordinary journey, 8 December 1935 – 24 November 2025.
