SP releases poll manifesto: With a mix of welfarism and social justice, Akhilesh Yadav hopes to score big in UP

The manifesto includes giving a legal guarantee of minimum support price to the farmers, waiving off agricultural loans of farmers, providing free irrigation facilities, and formation of a Farmers’ Commission.

Less than a week after the Congress released its ‘Sankalp Patra’ (election manifesto), its senior alliance partner in Uttar Pradesh—the Samajwadi Party on April 11 released its vision document for the Lok Sabha elections. Among a host of socio-economic and welfare oriented pronouncement, the party has promised a caste-based census by 2025.

As the INIDA bloc got into a huddle over the seat-sharing pact in India’s most electorally significant state,  the grouping unequivocally expressed its desire to go beyond the rhetoric and communicate to the electorate an alternative model of life and livelihood that ensures their social, economic and political welfare. The alternative model of development that is all-encompassing is pitched against Bharatiya Janata Party’s version of development.

The SP is contesting 62 out of 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh as part of the alliance, while the Congress is contesting 17 seats. The Bhadohi Lok Sabha seat has been given to Trinamool Congress.
