In the previous general election, the DMK-Congress alliance registered a landslide victory in the southern state, winning 38 out of the 39 seats. The MK Stalin-led party won 24 seats while Congress clinched 8. The victory was a huge improvement from the 2014 results, when the alliance failed to win even a single seat in Tamil Nadu.

Meanwhile, the alliance led by rival AIADMK, which also included BJP, managed to bag just a single seat.
