From 1952 to 1967, the Congress held sway over this seat. However, the spell was broken by George Fernandes, who secured victory in the 1967 elections under the banner of the United Socialist Party. The seat returned to Congress in 1971. From 1977 to 1984, it was held by the Indian Lok Dal and the Janata Party. Subsequently, from 1984 to 1996, Congress's Murli Deora enjoyed a monopoly over the seat. Although his tenure was briefly interrupted by BJP's Jayawantiben Mehta's victory in 1996, Murli Deora managed to reclaim the seat in 1998. In 1999, Jayawantiben Mehta again emerged victorious. In 2004, Murli Deora's son, Milind Deora, won the seat on a Congress ticket.
