Also, in the state assembly polls held in 2023, the opposition Congress was confident of overthrowing the long-standing BJP government led by Shivraj Chouhan, which remained in power for nearly two decades, except for a brief 15-month period when the Congress took office after the 2018 elections.
However, the grand old party faced a debacle in the state again as it could win only 66 seats, while the Bhartiya Janata Party won with a landslide victory, bagging 163 seats out of the 230 assembly seats.
The Bharatiya Janata Party is again confident of repeating its previous performances to achieve the target of 370 seats in the upcoming polls, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is seeking a third straight term at the Centre.
The party has a challenge whether it is able to bloom the Lotus in Chhindwara, the lone seat it could not win in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Chhindwara has been the bastion of veteran Congress leader Kamal Nath.
Congress, the main opposition party in the INDIA bloc, will be contesting the polls in alliance with the Samajwadi Party in Madhya Pradesh. The grand old party will field its candidates on 16 seats, while the SP will take only one seat for its candidate.
In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, the saffron party won 27 seats with a vote-share of 54.8 percent, while Congress won two seats receiving 35.4 percent. The BJP is witnessing a rise in its political prospects in the state.
