The Election Commission on April 9 issued a show-cause notice to Congress leader Randeep Surjewala over his 'undignified' remarks against BJP Mathura MP Hema Malini.
The poll body also asked Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge to ensure compliance with its advisories on upholding women's dignity during campaigning.
Both the Congress leaders have been asked to submit their respective responses to the Election Commission. While Surjewala has been asked to respond by April 11 evening, Kharge has been given time till the following evening.
Last week, BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya hit out at the Congress MP and termed his remarks sexist and extremely derogatory. "Congress MP Randeep Surjewala makes a vile sexist comment, that is demeaning and derogatory, not just for Hema Malini, who is an accomplished individual, but women in general," he wrote on X, formerly Twitter, while sharing an undated video.
Surjewala said the undated video was edited and distorted and he never intended to insult or hurt the BJP MP. He also accused the BJP of twisting facts and said that he has utmost respect for the actor-turned-politician.
The Haryana State Commission for Women had, on April 4, issued a notice to Surjewala for his 'indecent' remarks against Hema Malini.
Condemning the leader's remarks, Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini said this shows the character of Congress leaders and the language they use for women. "Modi government has taken several steps to empower women and launched many schemes for their benefit but Congress leaders have been regularly insulting them. Women will teach the Congress a lesson in the Lok Sabha polls," he said.
