National Conference's Javid Hassan Baig emerges victorious.
The parliamentary seat came into limelight in the recent Lok Sabha elections, when Sheikh Abdul Rashid, popularly known as Engineer Rashid, defeated former J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah. Several Kashmir-based parties have alleged that Rashid is being propped up by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to cut votes of the established parties and his Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) and the saffron party are eyeing to form a government in the Union Territory.
The seat has a total of 25 candidates fighting it out for the first assembly election since 2014, when the People Democratic Party (PDP) under Mufti Mohammad Sayeed emerged as the single largest party and formed government in alliance with the BJP.
Despite the pre-poll alliance, National Conference (NC) and the Congress party have fielded candidates in this seat. Javid Hassan Baig of NC will take on Congress’ Mir Iqbal Ahmad, while PDP’s Mohd Rafiq Rather is also in fray. Baig, who was with PDP at that time, had secured the seat in the last assembly election in 2014.
People Conference, Janata Dal United, Samajwadi Party, and Republican Party of India (Athawale) and few other parties have also fielded their respective candidates, while many independents are also in race for the seat.
The 2024 Jammu and Kashmir assembly election is the first polls since the revocation of Article 370 and conversion of the state into two Union Territories- Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
The voting for all the 90 seats in the UT took place in three phases on September 18, September 25, and October 1. The Congress and the NC have forged a pre-poll alliance for the election, while PDP and the BJP are contesting with tie ups with smaller parties.
