The Kuppam elections are causing a stir in Andhra Pradesh as the vote counting for the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections begins. There is a mix of excitement, anxiety, and hope as former Chief Minister and TDP Chief Nara Chandrababu Naidu defends his longstanding stronghold. The political atmosphere is lively, with TDP supporters and Naidu riding high on optimism from exit polls, while the ruling YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) is making every effort to challenge its dominance.

For more than three decades, Chandrababu Naidu has been a dominant force in Kuppam, securing the constituency since 1989 through seven consecutive terms. However, the past decade has seen a shift in the political landscape, particularly with the emergence of the Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSRCP. This year, Naidu faces a formidable challenge from 33-year-old Krishna Raghava Jayendra Bharath, who is determined to unseat the veteran politician.

In the 2014 assembly elections, Naidu won with a significant majority of 47,217 votes out of around 200,000 votes polled, defeating YSRCP’s K Chandramouli. However, by 2019, his majority had reduced to 30,722 votes amidst a wave of support for the YSRCP, which swept 151 seats in the state assembly, leaving TDP with just 23. This narrowing margin has made the 2024 elections even more critical for Naidu.

Naidu’s task has been complicated by the 2022 local body elections results, where the YSRCP made significant inroads in Kuppam. The ruling party captured 19 of 25 wards, 75 of 89-gram panchayats, 62 of 65 block parishad seats, and all four zilla parishad seats in the constituency. This starkly contrasted the TDP’s performance in the 2014 local body elections, where it secured a majority before the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.
