The ruling party captured 19 of 25 wards, 75 of 89-gram panchayats, 62 of 65 block parishad seats, and all four zilla parishad seats in the constituency. This starkly contrasted the TDP’s performance in the 2014 local body elections, where it secured a majority before the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.
The YSRCP’s campaign strategy has focused on welfare schemes and local development to win over voters. Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy has emphasised the government’s achievements, stating, “The people of Kuppam have shown their faith in the YSRCP government, which is actively implementing welfare schemes. They have taught Naidu a lesson for betraying the backward classes.” This sentiment has been well received in various public meetings and rallies in the constituency.
In response to the challenging political environment, Naidu has personally campaigned in Kuppam, a departure from his approach in previous elections. Bharath, the YSRCP candidate, comes from the Vannekula Kshatriya community, an OBC group that makes up about 40% of Kuppam's voter base. His campaign has focused on engaging with this crucial demographic and has received direct support from the Chief Minister and senior party leaders. With Bharath's background and the strategic backing of the YSRCP, he presents a significant challenge to Naidu.
As the vote counting progresses, both parties are leaving no stone unturned. The TDP is hopeful for a significant victory, with some supporters predicting a majority of over 100,000 votes. This confidence is based on Naidu's longstanding connection with the constituency and his efforts to retain it. "The people of Kuppam have been my strength and inspiration throughout my political journey," Naidu said at a recent rally. "Their trust and support have been unwavering, and I am committed to continuing to serve them with dedication and integrity."
However, the YSRCP is equally confident, buoyed by their performance in recent elections and the large turnout at Jagan's roadshow in Kuppam.
