TN rains: Weather system intensifies, red alert issued in 8 districts, CM reviews situation

A 'red' alert was issued for 8 districts and an orange alert for Chennai for Tuesday, even as widespread rains lashed various parts of the state, according to the Met department.

As the Northeast monsoon intensified across Tamil Nadu, the regional weather office on Tuesday issued heavy rainfall alert to a number of districts, while Chief Minister M K Stalin reviewed the situation with officials and directed that precautionary measures be put in place in view of the downpour.

He also directed deputing IAS officers as Monitoring Officers to districts that have been issued heavy rain alerts.

A Low Pressure Area that formed over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a Well Marked Low Pressure Area, the Regional Meteorological Centre said in an update.

"Under the influence of an upper air cyclonic circulation over the South Bay of Bengal, a Low Pressure Area formed over Southwest Bay of Bengal at 0530 hrs IST of today, the 21st October 2025. It became a Well Marked Low Pressure Area over the same region at 0830 hrs IST of today, the 21st October 2025." "It is likely to move west-northwestwards and concentrate into a Depression over Southwest & adjoining Westcentral Bay of Bengal off north Tamilnadu-Puducherry-Karaikal & South Andhra Pradesh coasts by afternoon of tomorrow, the 22nd October 2025. Thereafter, it is likely to continue to move west-northwestwards towards north Tamilnadu-Puducherry-Karaikal & South Andhra Pradesh coasts and intensify further during subsequent 24 hours," it added.
