A 10-year-old boy was mauled to death by a pack of stray dogs at Mohi village in Ludhiana district on Monday while he was playing, police said.
According to the Ludhiana Rural Police, the deceased has been identified as Sanjeev Kumar, son of a migrant family from Bihar. The boy was rushed to a nearby hospital in Pandori but could not survive and died on the way after the pack of stray dogs attacked him.
Inspector Jaswinder Singh, Station House Officer (SHO) of Sudhar police station informed that the boy was living with his paternal grandparents in Mohi village. “His father is no more and his mother lives in Bihar. His grandfather Shankar was working in potato fields where harvesting was ongoing. The child was standing at some distance when a pack of 3-4 stray dogs attacked him. He was grievously injured in the neck and died on the way to hospital,” Singh said.
“We have not initiated any legal proceedings but the civil administration has been urged to remove stray dogs from the village,” the inspector added.
Kulpreet Singh, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Jagraon), who visited the village, stated that they would recommend financial compensation for the family of the deceased child. A proposal for this will be sent to the Punjab government through the Ludhiana deputy commissioner. "It was an unfortunate incident," the ADC remarked.
In a similar incident, a 10-year-old boy was killed by stray dogs in Hasanpur village, Mullanpur Dakha on January 5, 2025. Just six days later, on January 11, a pack of dogs attacked and killed an 11-year-old boy in the same village, prompting locals to block the Ludhiana-Ferozepur Road in protest. In response to these incidents, the district administration launched a dog sterilization drive.
