A five-year-old boy has sustained serious injuries after being mauled by a stray dog within a police residential colony in east Delhi’s Shakarpur, according to a News18 report. The incident occurred on Sunday when the child was visiting relatives with his father.
The attack was reportedly sudden, with the stray dog pouncing on the young boy and inflicting multiple deep bite wounds.
The child’s screams alerted a police inspector residing in the colony, who rushed to the scene and managed to pull the dog away. The injured boy was subsequently rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.
Confirming the severity of the attack, police stated, “The child received deep wounds in the attack. He has been admitted to a hospital where his condition is now stable.”
The report by News18 underscores that the incident took place within a secured government premises, raising further concerns about public safety.
This violent episode comes just days after the Supreme Court issued a significant modification to its own directives on the management of stray dogs in the capital region.
The court had initially taken a suo motu cognisance of the matter, ordering civic authorities in Delhi-NCR to capture all stray dogs and confine them to shelter homes within a six to eight-week timeframe.
However, in a subsequent hearing, the top court deemed its original order “too harsh.” It has now directed municipal authorities to instead release the canines after they have undergone sterilisation and de-worming procedures.
Furthermore, the Supreme Court has ordered the creation of dedicated feeding spaces for stray dogs, explicitly prohibiting the feeding of animals on public streets.
