Parts of Delhi and adjoining cities continued to receive intermittent rain through the early hours of Tuesday, prompting the India Meteorological Department to issue an orange alert for the national capital.
The early hours saw thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds blowing at 30–40 kmph. Light rain was recorded in areas like Dhaula Kuan, bringing a cool and pleasant start to the day across the region.
According to the IMD, Delhi received 24 mm of rainfall between 2:30 am and 5:30 am on Tuesday. The downpour, however, led to waterlogging in several parts of the city, including Mehrauli and Badarpur Road.
All districts of Delhi were under an orange alert, according to the nowcast viewed on IMD's website at around 4:30 am on Tuesday.
The IMD also placed adjoining cities of Uttar Pradesh's Noida and Ghaziabad under an orange alert for rainfall and thunderstorms, urging residents to stay cautious. Gurugram and Faridabad were put under a yellow warning for possible showers and moderate winds.
The wind speed is expected to remain high with gusts reaching up to 50 kmph. The minimum temperature could dip to 20 degrees Celsius while the maximum temperature could come down to 38 degrees Celsius. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely as well in Delhi.
The wet spell that began on Monday and extended into the early hours of Tuesday is linked to the first strong western disturbance of the post-monsoon season, bringing steady drizzle and intermittent showers across Delhi, Ghaziabad, Noida, Gurugram, and other NCR cities.
The rainfall and surface winds from the north-northeast, blowing at speeds of up to 15 kmph, have temporarily improved air quality across Delhi-NCR. However, humidity levels are expected to rise following the showers.
