The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a spell of moderate rainfall for Mumbai and neighbouring Thane in the coming days, with a yellow alert in place for August 13 when heavier showers and inclement weather are expected, TOI reported.

According to the IMD’s forecast released on Sunday, August 10, both cities are “very likely” to witness light to moderate rain or thundershowers from August 10 to August 12, with similar conditions anticipated again on August 14. Throughout the five-day forecast period, the IMD has maintained a “very likely” probability for rainfall, suggesting residents should prepare for consistent wet weather.

Highlighting the changing intensity, TOI cited IMD as warning that rainfall is set to increase notably on August 13. The yellow alert signals the likelihood of thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph at isolated locations. Such conditions may disrupt daily life and pose risks to commuters, especially in areas prone to flooding.

Rainfall patterns in Mumbai have shown noticeable fluctuations this season. Over the weekend from August 8-10, the city experienced intermittent showers, with the IMD’s Colaba observatory recording 1.6 mm and Santacruz logging 3.1 mm of rain in the 24 hours ending 8:30 am on August 10. Since the onset of the monsoon on June 1, cumulative rainfall has reached 998 mm at Colaba and 1,366 mm at Santacruz, according to the IMD data reported by TOI.
